0 Match Review: Roma-Napoli 0-1 “Ready or Not”

  • 15 Ottobre 2017

  • · AS Roma Corner

This was the real match to test this Roma side. Napoli, top of the league, 7 win out of 7, crushing teams all along, playing great football so far. A test to determine whether this Roma team is ready to battle alongside the top sides in Serie A and in Europe. Of course, Roma lost one nil, thanks to Lorenzo Insigne’s first-half strike, with Roma failing short in pursuit of an equaliser.

But the defeat goes beyond the result. Napoli showed a lot of confidence, just superior in the first half by controlling the ball and pressing Roma, who struggled to keep the opposition at bay. Di Francesco’s men were just unable to keep the same pace. Too clumsy at the back, too predictable in midfield, too weak on the wings. The worst seen so far this season.  Daniele De Rossi unfortunately was the main culprit, responsible for a silly mistake that created a golden opportunity for Napoli to score. Insigne did not waste it.

During second half EDF made some changes at the back and in midfield, and Roma did improve but it was not enough.  Of course, Pepe Reina and the crossbar denied a possible equalizer but that was it. Napoli seemed always on top and squandered some clear chances to double the advantage.  Roma were able to put some pressure in the last 20 mins but never gave the impression to play well as a team, just relied on whateveter scramble, or, on any random crosses from the wing, if could bring something.

Disappointment in the end. The only thing we can say is that we were missing several key players, that this team is still in the process of becoming a team. One note: Di Francesco game plan might not suit certain players, like De Rossi for instance, his way of playing in front of the defence. Daniele is a defender essentially, not a metronome able to push an attacking play. The same can be said about his natural replacement, Maxime Gonalons, who hardly features in this team. Roma might need a different player there if EDF insists on 4-3-3 formation, maybe Strootman can do that?

On another note, Chelsea awaits us on Wednesday, fresh of defeat against bottom team Crystal Palace, quite opposite as Napoli, 7 matches lost out of 7, zero points. Yet, yesterday they beat Chelsea 2-1. But rest assured, the game at Stamford Bridge will be quite different, if Roma wants to pull a positive result must be performing close to perfection, especially in defense and in midfield. We must pick ourselves up, get out there and play!  Daje. Forza Roma.

0 Qarabag-Roma 1-2 “In the bag”

Good points, 3 points in the bag and second place above Atletico who lost to Chelsea. Bad points, a not so good performance against a team well below average standards in the Champions League.

We were expecting a more convincing spirit and attitude, you need that in European competitions, regardless. Some player slacked on the pitch, just not focused, especially after Manolas and Dzeko goals that put Roma ahead in the first 15 mins. The game wrapped up? You can’t think this way at this level, in fact Roma disappeared afterwards and Qarabag looked dangerous in some circumstances, pulled one back for Gonalons silly mistake, then nearly got an equaliser in the final minutes. So, not perfect at all, but at least we have the 3 points we need. Next Chelsea front and back. Atletico in Madrid will probably be the decider for second spot. Next Serie A, Milan on Sunday, they are not at their best but we need a more solid performance in the San Siro.  Forza Roma, as always!

0 Match Review: Roma-Udinese 3-1 “45 minutes”

45 minutes, that’s how long took Roma to wrap up the match against Udinese.  Another game won based on clear superiority from the start as seen against Verona and Benevento. More goals by Edin Dzeko and El Sharaawy. More changes in the team rotation, but the end product is the same. Diego Perotti continues to show brilliance on the flank, despite missing the penalty that could have put Roma 4-0 up. He’s first penalty ever missed since at Roma. Edin Dzeko numbers are staggering: 22 goals in the last 22 games. 55 goals in 2 seasons. Encouraging performances and numbers in spite of Juve and Napoli continuing their unbeaten run.

Roma have so far emphatically won their games, nevermind the initial Inter set back. Juve and Napoli have shown resilience but nonetheless this Roma team can challenge anyone. Of course, tougher tests ahead will tell the real story but so far we can only be pleased by Eusebio Di Francesco’s work. As far as we are concerned, we do not miss Luciano Spalletti, apart from the work on the pitch, EDF is always straight to the point, no strange attitude and quite elegant on how he communicates to his players and the media.  He knows what he wants. He makes sure all his players feel important, no one is assured a place, anyone can enter the field anytime, all equally. Even at Inter, Spalletti keeps showing that he only considers a number of players, if you don’t fit the bill you might stay on the bench all season. Unlike Spalletti, EDF rotates well his players and uses his subs in a relevant way, not with 5 minutes to go. So, long live Eusebio, forget about the press calling for silly arguments. This team has potentials, we just need to behind them. Qarabag on Wednesday then Milan on Sunday. Daje Roma!

0 Match Review: Benevento-Roma 0-4 “Good Wind”

  • 21 Settembre 2017

Roma buried minnow Benevento without much effort. A predictable storyline, given the fact Napoli put 6 past them only 3 days ago. From the wings came most of the chances for Dzeko who easily put the ball in the back of the net, also with some help from the opposition. Benevento literally means “good wind”. Barely a football club that can survive at this kind of level. In four matches they scored one goal while conceding 14, two of which they scored themselves tonight. The good outcome is to bag andother 3 points and build that confidence to keep chase the pack.

Nothing much to say about the match, ordinary stuff.  No much effort from a Roma side who featured from the satrt Gonalons, Pellegrini, Cengiz and gave some more minutes to Florenzi.  What is more worrying from Serie A match 4 is that Napoli continues to score goals and win games emphatically.  On-form Lazio the latest victim on their own ground. Juve beat Fiorentina narrowly and Milan still don’t convince fully, but still grabbing 3 points.  Inter are struggling on the pitch, they don’t convince but they are there, until one day the luck might run out.

Roma must believe they can compete. Once the squad will be at full potential with Schick and Karsdorp then we will see the potentials.  In the meantime, let’s grab points, it’s our chance to capitalise, but they at home against Udinese first then away to Qarabag in the Champions League.  October will a tough month with tough fixtures. Be ready for that.  So that’s it for now, always Forza Roma!

0 Roma-Verona 3-0 “Emphatic”

What we expected. A convincing display, a great win. A night to remember, especially for Alessandro Florenzi, what a great comeback for the winger!  He was a pleasure to see him back on the pitch with the same intensity, he set up the first goal for Dzeko and was a thorn in the side of Verona throughout of match. Welcome back Ale! Same is to be said about Lorenzo Pellegrini, a great performance by the Italian international who replaced Strotman in midfield. It was also the first time for Cengiz Under from the start in place for Defrel, he showed glimpses he can be a cracking player on the right wing. Patrick Shick entered the field towards the end and although is not fit yet he showed what is capable of.   Di Francesco must be delighted to have these players at his disposal. The future is bright.

Th game itself was predictable. Hellas Verona are destined to a troubled season, they were just not able to tackle this Roma side. Dzeko scored twice and missed another two or three, Nainggolan the other goalscorer thanks to fantastic team play. The game could have ended with an impressive scoreline.  Other positive notes came from El Sharaawy and the backline, this time impeccable. So many changes for this game, the only othe rplayer who did not feature yet was Gonalons, expected to play instead of De Rossi, but he stayed on the bench.  Perhaps the frenchman is not ready yet. We will see at Benevento on EWednedday night what the coach will decide. But with Karsdorp on his way back, all players are finally available for picking. So, happy days. Roma are now facing a match every three days until October, including Qarabag in the Champions League.  On paper “easy games”. We must capitalise and bag three points for each. Chasing the top of the group in Serie A won’t be easy, especially when teams like Inter continue to bag points very fortunately while underperforming. But we are now there gaining full speed. Daje. Forza Roma.

0 Champions League: Roma-Atletico 0-0 “Square Point”

Good point or bad point?  Roma and Atletico start their CL campaign with a nil-nil draw. We are at the beginning of the season, Roma are still at a development stage, Atletico are already massive team in Europe, so we really did not know what to expect.  Roma started well in thew first half challenging the spaniards, a couple of chances wasted, then a couple of dubious penalties not given by the referee. Atletico came back stronger especially in the second half, expressing a clear superiority in team play. Roma still lacks fitness, quite evident by the way the spanish side led the game in the last half-hour, missing some incredible chances. We can argue that with more stamina Roma could have done better, even to win the game, but instead decided to settle for a point.  And rightly so. Atletico could have put game beyon doubt, even in the dying seconds. keeper Alisson was just superb to deny them victory.

Clearly, there is work to be done. It will take time to be at 100% for 90 minutes. Dzeko and Strootman did not impress. The defense looked a bit better.  Some positives from Nainggolan and Perotti.  At least, Roma showed resilience. Di Francesco understood was important to start the campaign with no defeat. And yes, one could argue that like the Inter game, denied penalties could have swing the game in our favour.  But here, let’s face it, it’s not really applicable. Atletico are just a superior side, and Roma need to catch up, maybe the return of Schick, Florenzi and Karsdorp will bring that extra stamina and class we need to compete at this level.  So, we take the point. Now let’s catch up in Serie A.  Daje Roma!

0 Match Review: Roma-Inter 1-3 ” The Great Robbery”

  • 27 Agosto 2017

  • · AS Roma Corner

Good morning Roma and rest of the world. We have woken up thinking about what happened last night. Was it just a bad dream? The reality this morning is that we just cannot comprehend how Roma lost a match dominated for at least 70 minutes, hitting the internal side of the post 3 times, so unlucky not to be able to put a second goal against an Inter side that did not exist up to that point. We cannot comprehend why a clear penalty was denied, and why the new VAR technology was not applied for a circumstance like that. Why didn’t the referee asks for the VAR assistance , instead asking the officials “Who do I do now?” when he should be the one asking for the VAR replay. Why did the officials deny the VAR reply and why the referee decides for a corner kick instead, if the Inter defender did not touch Perotti or the ball. This is an absolute sham, a series of mistakes that cost Roma possibly 3 points, because if Roma had doubled the advantage it would have been a different game altogether.  Let’s face it: Roma were robbed last night.

Inter were lucky enough to manage 4 shots in the Roma goal in 90 minutes and scoring 3. Thanks to Mauro Icardi’s impeccable skills in the penalty area. Of course, Roma lost a bit of touch after missing out doubling the advantage, Inter raised themselves somehow and turned the game around.  But what hurt the most is listening to the Inter coach Luciano Spalletti, claiming Inter deserved to win, and that the penalty was not a penalty. Not to talk about Totti, and the Roma fans that whistled him before the game. Just in complete denial. Much better Eusebio Di Francesco, his analyisis was impeccable instead. His team was unlucky this time but we have seen a very good display by Roma, pity for the last 20 minutes, especially with the defense. Jesus was good on the right for a good part of the game, but then suffered Perisic badly.  Fazio and especially Manolas were responsible for Icardi’s free range shots. Our best players on the pitch, Perotti, Kolarov and Dzeko. Perhaps, the only mistake made by EDF was making changes too late. Maybe Gonalons should have replaced De Rossi, and Cengiz Under for Defrel, since the young turk impressed when he came on.  But there is no point talking about that now. We need to move on. Now, two weeks break for International duties, good time to regain confidence and injured players like Peres, Karsdorp and Florenzi. Hopefully, Patrik Schick will be a new Roma player by tomorrow. New ammunition for Roma. Head on!  Forza Roma!

0 Roma-Juventus 5-6 ai rigori. Dzeko risponde a Mandzuckic, poi dal dischetto sbaglia Tumminello

  • 31 Luglio 2017
  • Flavia Miglietta
  • · News · Stagione 2017-18
