Roma is not getting better. On the contrary. After Cagliari we thought we could see something else, at least from the point of view of concentration. And instead in Europe – where Roma has done well so far – the team shows little hunger and suffers another defeat in Plzen, city of beer.
The qualification already in the pocket can not be an extenuating factor. There were the pride of a team towards a city at stake, temporarily silencing the controversy. And above all 2 and a half million euros prize by Uefa for the victory. Nothing. We have not seen anything. Only lazy players with no commitment, no fighting spirit.
Players who do not talk in the field, who knows if they talk outside the field. Olsen was not helped by his teammates in Cagliari while on the ground. The Greek Manolas yesterday showed himself to the angry fans after the final whistle, putting at least his face out, while the others wandered in the field and then quickly gained the way dressing rooms, including the “Roman-Captain” Florenzi.
Di Francesco has his responsibilities, after all it is his duty to motivate the troops to deliver the goods it in the field. We fear that he too has lost the last hope. The post-game interviews of the technician and especially of Manolas suggest that the team is not united.
But we want to continue to hope. Last year between November and December Roma was in deep crisis just like now. People asked for the head of Eusebio, Dzeko and co. Then in January the rebirth, the incredible performances with Chelsea and Barcelona, the semi-final with Liverpool and the run-up in the league culminated with the third place. I want to be optimistic and think that everything will be sorted out again this time. Genoa, Juventus, Sassuolo, Parma and Torino. At least 10-12 points. Last train. For everyone.
First half. Second half. Two different teams. Roma started bright and created some clear chances, but Dzeko failed to convert.
Not so clinical the bosnian. Instead, he looked better playing behind the strikers than as centrefoward, some great passes, eventually serving a great one for Cengiz Under to put Roma in the lead. Another turkish delight.
Roma went on in the second half with the same approach, until a silly move upfront triggered Shakhtar’s counter, Florenzi did not block and Manolas got fooled. 1-1. Roma’s game ended here.
Shakhtar increased the pace of the match, Roma went in clear difficulty with continuous mistakes in every corner of the pitch, and escaped conceding more goals thanks to Superman Alisson, once again superb. Until Fred’s free kick went in, unstoppable. 2-1
From there on, a siege in the Roma half, unable to regain control. The final miracle in the dying seconds, with Alisson and Peres saving Roma from a heavy defeat. Thankfully it stayed 2-1, chances to go through are still alive but a different attitude and attention is required in the second leg.
A tough defeat, yes, another unexplicable blackout, resounding last year encounter with Lyon. Pity, lots of work to do now but first Milan on Sunday. As always Forza Roma.
Returning from Madrid we made some reflections on everything that happened and that we did not want to happen. Three thousand fans, a great enthusiasm in the city, the arrival at the Wanda Metropolitan Stadium in metro, the singing up to the away fans section 23.
After the anthem of the Champions League something happened but we did not understand well; suddenly comes the Spanish police in the midst of the hot fringe, seems to seduce some scuffles between Roma fans. Then, they begin to remove banners and everyone get seated. There is not even a chant. Let’s wait. Nothing. Only a few occasional screams of sorrow turn the North Stand warmly, but then nothing. A tomb silence accompanies Romeathroughout the game, while the “Colchoneros” fans are a passionate spectacle to watch.
Some applause will only come when the Spanish crowd starts chanting against Lazio. Sadly, Roma lose 2-0 and go back home with the feeling of who came here to support the team, and we ended up penalizing it. Roma and all his fans have lost out. Even though the police have exaggerated and remanded us, perhaps even unjustly, we do not like being hostage to anyone. Roma first of all, regardless.
In the field, the team in the first half played at par, indeed, has also had several opportunities and only missed the last pass, a winning finishing. Atletico seemed intimidated, but then, over time, he became more convincing. In the second half, however, Roma collapsed with two deadly shots.
The last game will decide on the turn of the round. Rome still has the situation in hand by beating Qarabag. Atletico must do the miracle in London to hope. But everything is still in the balance because the matches have to be won in the field. Daje and Forza Roma!
Sorry about the delay. Just back from London. Exhausted but revived, a pile of mixed feelings after two days in the English Capital; the beautiful atmosphere, the fans, the expectations before the game, then the game itself. Whatever happened at Stamford Bridge, we can be proud , whatever the result. Of course, Roma did not start as favourite, not much expectations, hardly anyone could foresee Roma getting much out of this one. For us, the trip was more about the “craic”. as they say in this part of the world. And rightly so.
A bright start, then the usual story, one mistake in dfense, capital punishment by David Luiz first, then Eddie Hazard. Two-nil down. Then a light is shed by Aleksander Kolarov, a solo slalom with a rocking ball behind the Chelsea keeper. 2-1. Hope. Roma played better then Chelsea until now, so unfairly down on the scoreline. Second half: We all expect some Chelsea raging-reaction to put the game beyond doubt, instead Roma starts again even brighter, dominating the opposition all over the pitch. Edin Dzeko, the real superstar here scoring two fantastic goals that send the Roma crowd in heaven. 2-3!
Later, another one near certain, a header that incredibly goes wide! it could wrapped up the game for Roma. 2-4? Nope. Instead another silly mistake allows Hazard to equalise. 3-3. Maybe a lost opportunity to seal victory and nearly secure second place in the group but also a great display to remember, a reminder that this Roma team can actually compete. In the meantime, Qarabag incredible draw against Atletico is another enexpected big help. We can do it! Next, Torino away. If we show this character anything is possible. Daje Roma!
Good points, 3 points in the bag and second place above Atletico who lost to Chelsea. Bad points, a not so good performance against a team well below average standards in the Champions League.
We were expecting a more convincing spirit and attitude, you need that in European competitions, regardless. Some player slacked on the pitch, just not focused, especially after Manolas and Dzeko goals that put Roma ahead in the first 15 mins. The game wrapped up? You can’t think this way at this level, in fact Roma disappeared afterwards and Qarabag looked dangerous in some circumstances, pulled one back for Gonalons silly mistake, then nearly got an equaliser in the final minutes. So, not perfect at all, but at least we have the 3 points we need. Next Chelsea front and back. Atletico in Madrid will probably be the decider for second spot. Next Serie A, Milan on Sunday, they are not at their best but we need a more solid performance in the San Siro. Forza Roma, as always!
Here we go again. After the rain it’s sunny again. The game against Sampdoria was cancelled for adverse weather condition, the other Serie A games went on with Juve, Napoli and Inter moving to the top while Milan were battered by a surprising Lazio side. Roma rested and tonight it’s Champions League football, at last. Last year Roma went out miserably against FC Porto, this year we look forward to this new adventure.
Group C it’s tough but exciting. Atletico Madrid and Chelsea will be difficult to beat but Roma must try to compete. Tonight it’s a key game. Atletico are a team who have managed to reach the Champions League final twice in the last 4 years. Experienced and tough team to play against, led by old enemy Diego Simeone, a former Lazio and Inter toughman. Roma have rested but lost Patrik Schick already for a couple of weeks. It will important the attitude, respect your opposition but at the same don’t get intimidated. They’re well able to keep and pass the ball in midfield and have dangerous attacking play with the likes of Griezmann and Carrasco. Roma must try to lead the game and not fall in the trap of waiting. The same attitude showed against Inter in the first 70 mins. Florenzi back will be an additional weapon to use on the right flank. But the uncertainty is at the back, with players of the likes of Manolas recently underperforming. Concentration will be crucial. If you make a mistake they can de deadly.
Disappointment to see the stadium only at 40,000 capacity. Prices were quite high with the Curvas selling at €40. On top, the game will be shown on major national channel, so many decided to stay at home. Pity. Roma need their fans back after years of austerity, stadium ticket prices do not help. The Club must understand we need to regain the trust of the fans, we need support nad want to see our stadium full again, at least in these major games. Nevertheless, the 40,000 fans attending tonight will be at full voice, you can bet. Daje. Forza Roma!
